Regarding "Furthermore, for sentient beings born in the narakas, there is subtle kavaḍīkārāhāra, meaning there is a slightly moving wind within the viscera," etc.: All great hells have this food. Fascicle sixty-six says there is no coarse food, whereas here it speaks of subtle food. As for coarse substances, small hells also have them; it is only when various kinds of kavaḍīkārāhāra transform and disintegrate that they can produce the function of nourishing the sense faculties and so forth, and by this condition, they are able to abide for a long time. It is not as the Hīnayāna claims, that when they swallow iron pellets, their hunger and thirst are temporarily dispelled, which is spoken of as food; because it does not nourish and sustain, and only causes injury and destruction. The meaning of the four foods is explained in detail as in the "Viniścaya" and in separate chapters. The *Āgama-sūtras* speak of eight foods, as explained in the commentary on the *Lotus Sūtra*.
