In the determination of vitarka and vicāra, all vitarka and vicāra must be conceptual discrimination (vikalpa). Fascicle seven of the Cheng weishi lun also has two masters: one says conceptual discrimination is solely defiled, being the third, conceptual discrimination, among the five dharmas, so the substance of vitarka and vicāra does not extend to the undefiled; the second says conceptual discrimination extends to the undefiled, because it is associated with subsequent attainment wisdom, and thus the substance of vitarka and vicāra also extends to the undefiled. This word "conceptual discrimination" is not the conceptual discrimination among the five dharmas. Because a narrow [category] is asked of a broad [category], it is answered in accordance with the prior proposition, as also explained in detail there.
