"An atom also has spatial direction-parts": "direction" refers to the various cardinal directions; "part" refers to subtle parts; although it has directions, it lacks subtle parts. An atom belongs only to gross matter, having nothing else of its own. Fascicle 1 of the *Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi* says: "Atoms have no spatial parts (digbhāga)"—here "direction" is itself the "part", not the meaning of the various directions. Although the two texts differ, they are not contradictory.
