Regarding the "five hindrances" (nīvaraṇa), fascicle eighty-nine states that these five hindrances are established in contradiction to five states: first, in the householder state, drifting in sense objects and contradicting the sacred teaching, the hindrance of sensual desire is established; second, being unable to tolerate the admonition and instruction of companions in the Dharma and thus contradicting the superior Dharma, the hindrance of ill will is established; third, contradicting śamatha, the hindrance of torpor and sleep is established; fourth, contradicting vipaśyanā, the hindrance of restlessness and regret is established; fifth, contradicting the decisive analysis of doctrine, discerning wisdom, and the resolute belief in the sacred teaching, the hindrance of doubt is established. The Abhidharmasamuccaya also states: they obstruct five states, namely the state of delighting in renunciation, the state of discerning wrong conduct, and the states of calming, exerting, and equanimity. It is as extensively explained there.
