Regarding the five hindrances (nīvaraṇa), the eighty-ninth fascicle says: 'These five hindrances are established in opposition to five situations: first, in the stage of a householder, being swept away by sensual objects and going against the noble teaching establishes the hindrance of sensual desire; second, being unable to tolerate fellow practitioners who are admonishable and opposing delightful phenomena establishes the hindrance of ill will; third, opposing śamatha establishes the hindrance of torpor and sleep; fourth, opposing vipaśyanā establishes the hindrance of restlessness and remorse; fifth, opposing doctrinal debate, non-inverted discernment, and so forth establishes the hindrance of doubt.' The Abhidharmasamuccaya states that they obstruct five stages, namely: the stage of delighting in renunciation, the stage of awareness of wrong practice, and the stages of calming, uplifting, and equanimity, as explained at length therein.
