In taking what is not given, there are also three parts: first, stating the general phrase; next, separately explaining the fourteen phrases; and finally, a concluding formulation of the summarized meaning. "Whether hoarding or moving": inanimate objects such as grains and wheat are called "hoarding"; sentient beings are called "moving." Alternatively, not removing from a place is called "hoarding," and lifting away from the original place is called "moving." "If in a secluded place it grows": this means that grains, wheat, and the like are covered and caused to grow without leaving their original place. "Hoarding" and "moving" are as before. "If that owner of the property did not give it beforehand, as in the manner of repaying a debt": "as in the manner of repaying a debt" means not giving as in the manner of repaying a debt; not having given it beforehand, similar to repaying a debt, is called "not giving." If one discards it in accordance with the thief's desire to use it, this is called "abandoning for use," and there may be no offense. Because one takes it when it has not been abandoned in accordance with the thief's desire to use it, it is called "taking what has not been abandoned." Reading the syntax as one long phrase makes the meaning overly remote. "Greedy and voracious": greed for wealth is called "greedy" (tāo); greed for food is called "voracious" (tiè). "Meaning that although surpassing others, one is defiled by the taint of faults": although one obtains that wealth through contention, because the wealth was not one's own property and one contended to take it, it is called "impure taking."
