3.43

敘執中，初總敘二因、後別顯二因。因修不思亦知有覺，作意思量亦知有我，故名二因。

In describing the attachments, first it generally sets forth two causes, and then separately reveals the two causes. Because through cultivation one knows there is consciousness even without conceptualising, and through mental application and deliberation one also knows there is a self, they are therefore called the two causes.
