Above, four rationales were stated; below, four counter-challenges are presented, matching each of the preceding four individually. The first challenge states: If this paddy did not come to be born from that grain, then in worldly convention everyone should establish that everything is the cause of everything, so that effects would have no determinate cause, since effects would arise universally; thus wheat and so forth should also be the cause of grain and the like. The second challenge states: If one seeking the effect of paddy did not seek and take only the cause of grain, then in order to seek a single effect of paddy, one should take all causes such as wheat, beans, and so forth. Third: If one did not apply labor to plant and hoe in grain to seek the effect of paddy, then to seek the effect of paddy, one should apply effort and management among all wheat, beans, and so forth. Fourth: If that effect of paddy did not arise solely from grain, then from all wheat, beans, and so forth, all the remaining grain, wheat, and the like should be born.
