Among the sixty-two views, forty views are eternalist views: namely, four theories that all is eternal, four theories that parts are eternal, eight of conscious [survival], eight of unconscious [survival], and sixteen of neither conscious nor non-conscious [survival]. In addition, there is the conception that the nature of subtle atoms (paramāṇu) is eternal; both the Vaiśeṣikas and the Lokāyatas hold this view. The presentation of tenets has two parts: first, presenting the grounds for the forty eternalist views; second, presenting the reason for grasping atoms as eternal. The sixty-two views are explained in this fascicle and subsequent fascicles 58 and 87, the ninth and tenth fascicles of the *Prakaraṇāryavācā*, the first fascicle of the *Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā*, and the separate chapter of the sixth fascicle of the *Cheng weishi lun*. The *Brahmajāla-sūtra on the Sixty-Two Views* and the *Śāriputrābhidharma* are the doctrines of the Saṃmatīya school; the "Brahmajāla Chapter" of the *Dīrgha-āgama* is the doctrine of the Mahāsāṃghika school; fascicles 199 and 200 of the *Mahāvibhāṣā* are the doctrines of the Sarvāstivāda school, which are not the tenets followed here. Fascicle 15 of the *Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā* and the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa* state that the view of identity (satkāyadṛṣṭi) and the extreme view (antagrāhadṛṣṭi) are the root, each of the five aggregates having four views of "mine", forming twenty views across the three times, which together with the root make sixty-two views. These are different explanations according to faculties, not what is elucidated here; to avoid prolixity, they will not be narrated.
