「識能為彼新生因故」等者，由識入胎為新生因，總報能為別報緣故。或由識種為名色親因，令新生故。此說名色初結生義。准下識入胎，前說為善。又三界生，識因必遍，故此偏說。

Regarding 'Because consciousness can be the cause of its new birth': because consciousness enters the womb as the cause of new birth, the general retributive fruit can serve as the condition for the particular retributive fruits. Or, because the seed of consciousness is the direct cause of name-and-form, it brings about new birth. This speaks of the initial rebirth-linking of name-and-form. In accordance with consciousness entering the womb below, the former explanation is better. Furthermore, for birth in the three realms, the cause of consciousness is necessarily universal; hence it is spoken of specifically here.
