First, on "six kinds of verbal expressions: progressive and reverse sequences": Both contaminated and uncontaminated [dharmas] have progressive and reverse sequences. On "a portion and the complete set": Just as in the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, where for a living Brahmin eleven constituents are explained, omitting birth due to the inclination and capacity [of the listener]—although this is also a portion, it is not what is meant here. What is meant here is: when observing the dark side, one retreats upon reaching consciousness and observes only ten constituents; or, from the entry of name-and-form into the womb, one observes only nine constituents, which is called the 'constituent of a portion'. If one observes the bright side, one observes all twelve together, completely ceases the twelve, and cultivates the path to their cessation, which is called the 'constituent of the complete set'. This very 'portion' is called the dark side, because it observes suffering and origin; this very 'complete set' is called the bright side, because it observes cessation and the path. Defilement and purification, however, pertain to the mind of contemplation, and are therefore not discussed here.
