The second simile has six phrases. "Mountain" has the meaning of loftiness, because it transcends the first dhyāna. "Sharp peak" means reaching uniform taste (ekarasa). "Adhimokṣa" means that a lofty mountain peak has only a single crest; in the second dhyāna there is only a single mental gateway, because it is free of the externally dispersing objects of vitarka and vicāra. "Spring" symbolizes inner tranquil purity, because the various waters of joy and bliss flow out from it. Water flowing out from the side of a mountain as large as a chariot axle is called a "water-axle". Spring water welling up and overflowing as large as a well-rope is called a "water-rope". Joy moistens like a water-axle; bliss moistens like a water-rope. Moistening the associated mind is like issuing from the side; next, moistening the five faculties is like welling up above; hence the similes of welling up and overflowing above are used.
