In the third simile, regarding "Water symbolizes the samādhi free of joy and without vitarka or vicāra, up to symbolizing the calyx of a flower immersed in water": what these words intend to show is that the second dhyāna is like water, stirred and welling up due to joy, like a flower emerging from water, for the flower symbolizes joy. Now the third dhyāna is free of joy and without vitarka or vicāra, and is likewise like water; its bliss is like the calyx of a flower whose bud has not yet opened and burst, still remaining in the water, which is called the calyx of a flower. It accords with samādhi and is unstirred and not welling up, like being in water.
