In distinguishing the characteristics individually, it first explains four characteristics, and later explains thirty-two characteristics. Regarding 'the characteristic of the object refers to the substantial characteristic of discrimination regarding knowable phenomena': the substance of discrimination is the cognitive mind and mental factors, and the characteristic of discrimination is the objective aspect (nimittabhāga); because the concentrated mind takes this seeing and objective aspects as its object. Regarding 'the characteristic of cause and condition refers to the equipment for absorption': this refers to causes such as non-remorse, joy, and bliss. The four such as not guarding the sense-doors refer to, as previously stated: 1. not guarding the sense-doors; 2. not knowing moderation in eating; 3. not remaining constantly awake during the first and last watches of the night to diligently cultivate contemplative practice; 4. not dwelling in clear comprehension, as explained in detail below in the Śrāvakabhūmi. 'The characteristics of sinking, agitation, and distraction' are just as their names imply; 'the characteristic of attachment' has ignorance as its nature in substance, or it has craving as its nature, or it has all afflictions such as views and doubt as its nature.
