In entering meditative absorption through the four conditions, the text is divided into three parts: statement, explanation, and conclusion. Regarding the four indeterminate roots such as attachment to higher dhyāna: four kinds of people attain meditative absorption and give rise to these four kinds, but a single person does not necessarily give rise to all four. Attachment is the mental factor of greed; view means clinging to views (dṛṣṭiparāmarśa); pride is self-pride (ātmamāna); doubt is delusional doubt. Here, arising upon having previously heard refers to prior to attaining meditative absorption, where one first gives rise to the four roots; these are not exclusively indeterminate in nature, because in the desire realm they also encompass the unwholesome. / Alternatively, only after attaining meditative absorption does one subsequently give rise to the four kinds, which are then indeterminate.
