In the extensive differentiation of the five gates of this bhūmi, the three sections above have already completed the explanation of the four gates. Below, the fourth section interprets the essential principles of the sūtras, and the final section contains various miscellaneous meanings; the text is divided into two: First, interpreting the essential principles, which explains the latter three of the four gates previously designated by conception—dhyāna, liberation, samādhi, and samāpatti—because the four dhyānas have already been explained above; only later, in the thirteenth fascicle, will the miscellaneous meanings be explained. Although both sections are explanations of sūtras, because the miscellaneous meanings of the various gates are each distinct, they are divided into two kinds. The first section contains two parts: first an overview of what is stated below, and then individual explanations. In the individual explanations there are three parts: 1. explaining liberations; 2. explaining samādhis, from the three samādhis onward; 3. explaining samāpattis, from the five directly perceived samāpattis downward. The first gate has four parts: first, explaining the liberations; second, explaining the bases of mastery; third, explaining the bases of totality; fourth, a general analysis. Although according to the preceding headings the bases of mastery and totality are said to belong to the gate of samāpatti, they are now explained immediately following the liberations in accordance with the sequence of cultivation and arising. Previously, because they are induced through mixed arising following others, or following an ultimate sense, they were separated from liberation and subsumed under the gate of samāpatti; liberation has the most superior function in eliminating obstacles, and so was designated as a distinct gate. Now, because the sequence of initial cultivation is necessarily like this, they are explained here, which is not contradictory.
