Sixth, distinction of attainment by ordinary beings and noble ones: There is an opinion that the first seven deliverances are accessible to both ordinary beings and noble ones, whereas the eighth deliverance is attained solely by noble ones, because it is outflow-free. Fascicle seventy-three states: worldlings and noble ones alike attain the first three, yet there is a difference; both internal and external paths attain them without error, because they eliminate the obstacle to transformations and attain mastery. However, Fascicle fifteen of the Yogācārabhūmi says: because the first three deliverances attain mastery over all form, they can induce the supernormal powers of the noble ones, which are not shared with any worldlings. That treatise itself explains this as what is practiced by non-returners and arhats; it does not say that worldlings do not practice the first three. As for the next four deliverances, the Abhidharmasamuccaya states: they are attained by disciples of the Noble One; being capable of according with what is outflow-free and of a clean nature, they are properly called deliverances, because they are delivered from savoring attachment. Heterodox paths, relying on the formless [attainments], mostly give rise to savoring attachment and cling to them as nirvāṇa; thus, by contrast, this shows that without restricting the first three to attainment solely by noble disciples, they are open to heterodox paths. There is an opinion that only the first three are common to internal and external paths, attained by both ordinary beings and noble ones, because the treatise only states that worldlings attain these; the latter five are attained solely by noble ones, because the treatise speaks of disciples of the Noble One and does not mention worldlings.
