The fourth major section, "the sūtra states, 'with a mind accompanied by benevolence'" and so forth: this explains the distinctions among the four immeasurables. The text of the sūtra has three parts: first, explaining the general sūtra text; next, distinguishing the causes by questions and answers to explain the specific sūtra text; and finally, concluding with the establishment of noble practice.
The first passage has ten phrases. "Benefit and happiness are demonstrated by all immeasurables" because both exist in all four immeasurables. Fascicle forty-four states that the first three are happiness and the last one is benefit: that text states that the first three provide mundane, present welfare, termed happiness, while the last one provides supramundane, future welfare, termed benefit; thus the two are distinguished. Here, relying on the fact that all four are equally able to remove suffering and grant pleasure, and all universally are able to bestow the small and great fruits of wisdom and merit, all are called benefit.
"Free from enmity, free from rivalry, free from harmful malice" correspond in respective order to mental, vocal, and bodily action.
