Inference (anumāna) refers to the cognition that observes an object by relying on multiple marks. Among the two means of valid cognition, it is this cognition that is called the result, etc., all as explained in hetuvidyā. "Grasping one's own marks and inferring religious and lay status": grasping such marks as robes and bowls, one infers that one is a religious practitioner; wearing caps and robes of state, one infers that one is a layperson.
