The fourth section, on the topic of grammar (śabdavidyā), has two parts: first, summing up the preceding and laying out the list; second, explaining them individually. "The designation and establishment of phenomena, namely word-groups, phrase-groups," etc., sets forth the substance of grammar. "And the five virtues," etc.: because the substance of that sound possesses the five virtues, it then forms the treatise on grammar (śabda-śāstra), the superior expressive sound. Grammarians say that the substance of names, phrases, and phonemes is sound itself; the nature of sound is eternal, whereas vocal resonance is impermanent. The impermanent resonance reveals the eternal sound; knowing this eternal sound is called grammar. "The designation and establishment of meaning" is the meaning expressed by grammar, because grammar is established based on the expresser and the expressed. Furthermore, among the six kinds explained, "the meaning of distinctive association" means that phenomena of the same category can be mutually associated because their substances are distinct. "The meaning of transformation" is like the transformation of a single phenomenon through countless distinctive aspects of meaning, as when a single physical form is distinctively transformed into meanings such as visible, invisible, and so forth.
