Increasing by threes has forty-five categories. "Saying 'ten characteristics means destroying life,' etc.": the preceding word "destroying" applies throughout all ten below. Idle talk is named "destruction." "Undertakings to be performed": speaking improperly concerning proper undertakings is named frivolous talk. Regarding the first seven kinds, "destruction by action" refers to what is termed "action" by visibly manifesting through body and speech externally. For the next two kinds, "destruction of mental inclination": non-greed and non-ill-will are correct mental inclinations. For the final kind, "destruction of expedient means": correct view is indeed the cause of correct wisdom. "Saying 'three roots'" refers to greed, ill-will, and wrong view. Here it is said that for the ten courses of action, these three are the preliminary steps, and each becomes the culmination according to its application. Alternatively, this specifically clarifies the three mental courses of action.
