「初一不共」者，初、戒學可修唯有一，不假定慧亦得成故。　「中不離初」者，第二、定學不離戒學修方便成。　「上不離二」者，第三、慧學學必具初二。若阿羅漢三學已滿，超彼一切。

'The first is uncommon': first, the training in morality can be practiced alone as one, because it can be achieved without relying on concentration and wisdom. 'The middle is not separated from the first': second, the training in concentration is not separated from the training in morality in cultivating expedients to achieve it. 'The superior is not separated from the two': third, the training in wisdom must necessarily be endowed with the first two as a training. When an arhat has perfected the three trainings, he transcends all of them.
