In the third section of five verses explaining craving, the first verse is a question and the subsequent four verses are the answer. Within the answer, the first three are preparatory contemplations, and the last one is the fundamental contemplation. Within the preparatory contemplations, the first is the contemplation of revulsion toward objects; the next is the contemplation of non-interruption; the third has three contemplations: 1. suffering, 2. non-self, 3. contemplation of the application of mindfulness to the body. In the prose explanation, beginning from "If one guards the sense faculties and does not let desire and craving ruin one's mind, etc.," it explains the fourth verse on the fundamental contemplation. Prior to explaining that verse, it makes a preparatory analysis. From "Having known this, one who has not yet abandoned craving and desires is partially a trainee..." onwards, it directly explains the root verse. Among the five causes for the arising of desire and craving, the second is wishing for and delighting in the desire realm; the third is grasping notions of sentient beings such as male and female; the fourth is being oppressed by fierce craving.
