In the explanation of the one verse of the seventeenth [section], the first line is the general cause, and the latter three lines are the four virtues attained: first, being able to taste the flavor of seclusion; second, dhyāna; third, constancy and thoroughness; fourth, mindful reception of undefiled joy and pleasure. "Dread" means fright, trepidation, and cowardice; "without dread" means being without these. "Joy and pleasure of liberation" refers to the unconditioned. "Undefiled joy and pleasure" refers to the conditioned.
