In the one verse of the eighteenth [section], the first two lines are the five factors to be accomplished, and the latter two lines are the five factors to be severed. First, having no livelihood of crafts means being without four things: (1) not having an arrogant or wrong livelihood; (2) not relying on influential families; (3) not aiming for famous clans; (4) not deceptively adopting the teachings of the noble ones. Worldly ordinary beings rely on crafts as their occupation and inevitably make improper pursuits; the true bhikṣu is not like this, because he does not rely on these four to give rise to improper pursuits of food, drink, and clothing as they do. Second, not scorning oneself: if one improperly amasses clothes and food with greed and does not maintain the robe and bowl, this is called scorning oneself; the bhikṣu is not so, which is called not scorning oneself. Third, delighting in excellence: aspiring to and loving the śramaṇa, aspiring to and loving the points of training, and having firm discipline. Fourth, delighting in the faculties: delighting in giving rise to the faculty of joy, having contentment in pure livelihood; delighting in giving rise to the faculty of wisdom, entering clear realization and so forth; delighting in giving rise to the faculty of mindfulness, dispelling all evils. Fifth, complete liberation: because bonds, fetters, and seeds are all liberated. These are called accomplishing the five factors. [Next,] first, being homeless: never abandoning the precepts to fall back into the worldly snare. Second, being without accumulation: receiving neither wealth nor [desirable] sensory realms. Third, being without craving: not desiring wealth or life, nor intentionally speaking falsely. Fourth, severing desires: being without taking what is not given. Fifth, walking alone: greed and desire already ended, wandering solitarily without companions, abandoning non-celibate conduct, wonderfully penetrating cause and effect, with all evils eradicated, and not presuming evil causes or causelessness in bringing about effects. These are called severing the five factors. One may separately match and explain the text according to the force of these meanings.
