Because of the sixteen superior practices, it is called universal observation, since it observes all the truths. Herein, first there is general recollection; below "whether long or short," it specifically sets forth the sixteen; and in the gate below, it explains the sixteen. According to the four smṛtyupasthānas, the ancients matched them four by four: 1. contemplating the long breath; 2. contemplating the short breath; 3. contemplating the breath pervading the body; 4. contemplating the breath calming bodily formations. These four contemplate the body. 5. Contemplating the inhalation and exhalation of joy; 6. contemplating the exhalation and inhalation of bliss; 7. contemplating mental formations during exhalation and inhalation; 8. contemplating the breath calming mental formations. These four contemplate feelings. 9. Contemplating the mind during inhalation and exhalation; 10. contemplating the gladdening of the mind with breath; 11. contemplating the holding of the mind with breath; 12. contemplating the liberating of the mind with breath. These four are practices of the mind. 13. Contemplating the breath of impermanence; 14. contemplating the breath of abandoning; 15. contemplating the breath of dispassion; 16. contemplating the exhalation and inhalation of cessation, and so forth. These four are practices of contemplating phenomena.
