Where the seven limbs of awakening and so forth are listed, all have the character děng ("equal / and so forth"). The Dharma master says: this equal awakening refers to the Tathāgata; the seven limbs are the causes capable of completing equal awakening, so they all have the character děng. If so, the subsequent eight limbs of the noble path would also be like this. Objections arise regarding the first five stages, so this explanation is problematic. Another explanation: the seven awakenings are on the path of seeing, and the eight rights are on the path of cultivation; the path of seeing is without signs, and the path of cultivation involves discrimination; because of discrimination there are signs, and because of being without signs there is awakening with equanimity, so it is called equal awakening. This explanation presents no contradiction from beginning to end.
