Regarding the treatise saying, "having attained liberation from the hindrances, one realizes and enters the fundamental absorption": in the uninterrupted path, the unsteady mind is precisely what is counteracted. Because the first eight have distinct counteragents, the preparatory path contemplates the mind discriminatively; the uninterrupted path afterwards contemplates general characteristics, or it is called the uninterrupted path, yet it does not necessarily clarify the preliminary expedient. For the eight minds prior to the uninterrupted path, what is counteracted are all hindrances, having distinct counteragents; although the latter six kinds do not eliminate hindrances, they sever all defilements in general. Discriminating the sequence of this preliminary expedient and the uninterrupted [path] in this manner, the eight merely suppress defilements and are not the uninterrupted [path].
