Regarding the treatise saying, "arising solely by the power of discrimination and not by the power of the objective sphere: namely, at the time of abiding, reflecting on the past..." and so forth: this means that one does not move within the objective sphere, has no movement in the objective sphere, but merely takes the past and future as object, hence it is called 'abiding'. "Also by the power of discrimination and the power of the objective sphere": this means moving within the objective sphere, which is called 'moving'. In the case of unwholesome dharmas, when arising by the power of the objective sphere, there must be discrimination, hence there is no isolated clause for this. "Discrimination is the mind, and gives rise to unwholesomeness," and so forth: this is the first isolated clause, which concerns arising with respect to the past and future; the second combined clause arises from present spheres. This is identical to the first alternative explanation above of exerting effort and vigor.
