8.41

論自持心中云「非不慧捨」，廣說乃至「要當速疾，而非遲緩」者，此中意，各往施主家，何必要望施，非不慧施，而即往也？不應如此。不慧施，謂慳不施。若不施不往，不應作此事，非不慧施而即不往。若往時，乃至速疾，不得遲緩。

In the treatise's discussion of guarding one's own mind, it says: "not without an intelligent donation," and elaborating up to "it must be swift, and not sluggish." The meaning here is: when going to each donor's house, why must one anticipate a gift, and only go if there is an intelligent donation? It should not be like this. "Unintelligent donation" refers to stinginess and not giving. If one does not go because they do not give, one should not do this; it is not the case that because of an unintelligent donation one immediately does not go. When one goes, up to [the point that] it must be swift, one must not be sluggish.
