Regarding the śāstra's statement: "The manaskāra of examination can, with respect to what has been attained, free [one] from excessive pride and stably settle one's mind": why is it that when severing the superior grade it is not said that one is freed from excessive pride, nor is it said that one is freed from excessive pride after the severing of the third grade, but rather it is said that one is freed from excessive pride at the severing of the middle grade? The meaning is: the afflictions of the first six grades are coarse and easy to recognize, while the afflictions of the last three grades are subtle and difficult to discern. Having severed the coarse afflictions of the preceding superior and middle grades, not knowing that the inferior grade of afflictions remains, one gives rise to excessive pride, supposing that all nine grades have already been exhausted and that one has attained the fundamental concentration. Now, in order to abandon this pride, the abandonment of excessive pride is stated after severing the middle grade of afflictions, not after the superior grade.
