The bhūmis of having investigation (savitarka) and so forth have three meanings, and there is a definitive view. The second master says: regarding one who has separated from desire for investigation in the intermediate dhyāna, it is like entering the contemplation of impurity in the desire realm, temporarily suppressing craving through analysis, and not liberation by means of the six aspects of practice. The Vibhāṣā is rather difficult [here]; when explaining the names of the bhūmis in the fourth fascicle, this will be broadly clarified. The third master, explaining the passage cited by the first master, states that it speaks only of the three mindless states of the higher realms and does not speak of the mindless states of fainting and sleep in the lower realms; this is a brief explanation of coarse characteristics, whose meaning is apparent and understandable. That fascicle did not resolve it on its own; it will be fully clarified under the fivefold mindless states.
