The treatise says: 'Consciousness in the form realm has coming and going; consciousness in the formless realm has death and birth.' The form [realm] has a body, while the formless [realm] has no body; being born in this place, one dies right in this place. This clarifies that in the lower two realms, consciousness abides in four aggregates; in the higher formless [realm], it abides in only three aggregates. Moreover, 'the form [realm] having birth' means that it has intermediate existence (antarābhava); the formless [realm] has no intermediate existence, and therefore it has death and birth. If so, why is it said that these two abodes last until the end of life? The former explanation is superior. 'Furthermore, these two abodes last until the end of life' clarifies that in both the form and formless abodes, consciousness abides until life ends. This is the culmination (paryanta) of the abodes. 'Furthermore, the meanings of growth, increase, and vastness of these two' explains the causes and conditions of the abodes whereby they achieve vastness. This is the culmination of the causes and conditions. The meaning of culmination is as explained before.
