"Vigorous and undamaged" means drawing [others] in by authoritative power. "Covering and protecting" means concealing their faults. Second, among the characteristics of beneficial and harmful factors, "bringing about what is disagreeable to them" means loving their enemies. "Obstructing what is agreeable to them" means hating their wise friends. "Inducing what is improper" means entrapping them in unrighteousness. Third, under drawing [others] in, "drawing in and holding, separated from joy and pleasure" means attaining the fourth dhyāna and so forth, as well as realizing the unconditioned. Fourth, "conforming and rendering service": one renders service to them and conforms to them. "Non-acquaintances" means those whom one does not know personally nor has known previously. As for their conforming, it is not that they previously were held as acquaintances to whom one rendered service and conformed. Fifth, by means of such service, based on four situations, one obtains five fruits. "The situation without taking in" refers to non-acquaintances, because they were not previously taken in. "The situation without harm or affliction" refers to relatives and friends. "The situation of lapsed offerings" refers to those whom one respects. "The situation of conforming through shared share" refers to those endowed with merit and wisdom; because they possess merit and wisdom, they are a refuge where many beings gather together. Once they have taken refuge, hoping to learn merit and wisdom so that their share becomes identical with theirs, this is called conforming through a shared share. Regarding "obtaining five fruits": because of rendering service, conforming, practicing giving, and so forth in the four situations, one generally obtains five fruits, which are not brought about individually. Or, the third and fourth fruits are obtained by rendering service to the fourth [type], conforming through a shared share with those endowed with merit and wisdom, while the rest are matched respectively, the meaning of which can be known. "Resolved in what is good" means having faith without doubt. "Firm in what is good" means being courageous without regression. Taking all moral discipline as the substance of the training in moral discipline, all concentration as the substance of the training in concentration, and all wisdom as the substance of the training in wisdom, each accords with its own vehicle without confusion, and is cultivated gradually in accordance with its stages, also without confusion or error. If one cultivates the three trainings based on disorderly skipping, it is said to be indeterminate.
