Among the four characteristics, there are three parts: first, distinguishing the basis; second, distinguishing the features; third, distinguishing the nominal establishment of states. In Mahāyāna, since arising and cessation are distinguished as identical with dharmas, they have no separate essence; the Hīnayāna says they exist [separately]. The Śataka-śāstra objects: "If there is a cessation that ceases a dharma, causing nonexistence to enter the past, and the ceasing dharma is present, it is called existent; if there is an arising that arises a dharma, causing existence to enter the present, and the arising dharma is future, it should be called nonexistent." This objection demonstrates that the entities of the four characteristics would both be existent.
