There are three kinds of cultivation of dhyāna: first, purely with outflows, which perfumes the lower four dhyānas; second, purely outflow-free, which is the inconceivable transformation death-and-rebirth (pariṇāmikī-cyuti) of the eighth bhūmi and above; third, both with and without outflows, which is the karma of the five pure abodes as explained before. For inconceivable transformation death-and-rebirth, prior to the seventh bhūmi, for both [bodhisattvas] and the two vehicles it applies to both with and without outflows, because ignorance serves as the condition, yet the samādhi that is generated is purely outflow-free; on the eighth bhūmi and above it is purely outflow-free, because ignorance is no longer aroused.
