Third, regarding the stature of sentient beings, the text is divided into five parts: 1. humans; 2. devas; 3. hell-beings; 4. asuras; 5. the formless realm. The bodily stature in this continent [of Jambudvīpa] is large when lifespan is long and small when lifespan is short; though large and small differ, it always conforms to three and a half cubits of their own body, and thus the measure is not fixed. In the eastern continent it is definitely three and a half cubits of their own body; in the western and northern continents it also conforms to three and a half cubits of their own body, yet it progressively increases. The eleventh fascicle of the Kośa differs from this, stating: "The stature of humans in Jambudvīpa is three and a half cubits or four cubits; for humans in the eastern, western, and northern continents, it doubles successively." That text says that in this continent it is three and a half or four cubits, in the eastern continent eight cubits, in the western continent sixteen cubits, and in the northern continent thirty-two cubits. Here it is said to progressively increase without mentioning doubling, because it is not fixed.
