Within the two causes of producing and projecting, regarding the factors subsumed under the states from consciousness onwards up to birth and old age and death serving as the causes and effects of producing and projecting: this says that the factor of consciousness links life in continuity, and the projecting and the projected exist at one time and are far removed from their fruit, so both are called projecting causes; the producing and the fruit are distinct across two lifetimes, so being proximate and able to produce, it is called the producing cause alone. The *Cheng weishi lun* states: producing the proximate, actual fruit is called the producing cause; projecting the distant, remaining fruit is called the projecting cause. The various gates explained are all as in that commentary. The three natures and ten causes are as explained in the *Shuyao*. This speaks of affliction, so it does not contradict the rest.
