Fifth, concerning subsumption under the four noble truths: Here, having stated that seven links are all the truth of suffering, the remaining five links are spoken of solely as the truth of the origin [of suffering], in order to reveal the distinction between the essences of the two truths; it is not that the five links are exclusively the truth of the origin. The Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi says: all are subsumed under the truth of suffering because their nature is that of the grasping aggregates. Five are also subsumed under the truth of the origin because their nature is karma and defilement. Oppression is the meaning of suffering, so all are suffering. Because they summon forth karmic retribution, this is the meaning of origin, and so the five are also the truth of the origin.
