Regarding “Bases”: These are the sentient beings of the three realms who are their objects, classified into three categories: (1) those without suffering and without pleasure—giving them pleasure is benevolence; (2) those with suffering—rescuing them is compassion; (3) those with pleasure—rejoicing with them is sympathetic joy. Toward the first category, one generates the thought of departing from delusion; toward the second category, the thought of departing from hatred; toward the third category, the thought of departing from attachment. Bringing about departure from evil with impartiality is equanimity. This cites the object of benevolence to subsume the other three. Each of these has three aspects, as explained elsewhere in the text.
