Regarding “Meritorious karma refers to that which incurs the maturation of favorable destinies, etc.”: Meritorious karma experiences overall maturation in the human and heavenly realms. Regarding “And accords with experience in the five destinies”: In four destinies one experiences particular maturations; in the hells one experiences equal-outflow results, resembling particular retribution, which is collectively referred to as according with the five destinies. One opinion holds that this is not so. The Cheng weishi lun states: when it is said elsewhere that they have equal-outflow pleasure, one should know that this is spoken in accordance with provisional doctrine. Therefore, in the Mahāyāna, there is no wholesome fruit there; due to wholesome karma, the suffering experienced is slight, which is called obtaining a fruit, and there is no separate particular retribution; this is unlike the Hīnayāna, which accepts that the four sense-data in the hells are incurred by wholesome karma. Another explanation is: this is spoken comprehensively of five destinies in terms of number, but particularly it is only four destinies. Yet another explanation is: excluding the asuras as one and combining them into six destinies, it is said that wholesome karma accords with the five destinies, but in reality does not exist in the hells.
