1. Explaining the contextual purpose. Among the seventeen bhūmis, the first nine bhūmis explain the objects of the three vehicles, divided into four [categories]: The first two bhūmis are the essence of the object, because all [phenomena] take consciousness as their nature. The next three bhūmis are the characteristics of the object, because coarse and subtle differ. The next two bhūmis are the function of the object, because functions are initiated at the two times of concentration and distraction. The last two bhūmis are the states of the object, because the two states of with-mind and without-mind differ. Because essence relies upon characteristics, possesses functions, and differs in sequential states, the objects of the nine bhūmis are established. Among the two essences of the object, easy to know and difficult to know serve as their sequence. Among the three characteristics of the object, the coarse, intermediate, and subtle grades serve as their sequence. Among the two functions of the object, superior and inferior grades serve as their sequence. Among the two states of the object, manifest and unmanifest times serve as their sequence. The two bhūmis below explain the function of the object, taking superior and inferior as their sequence; this is the contextual purpose of this bhūmi.
