As for "'gladness' means that a practitioner whose conduct has been pure from the beginning observes the pure conduct cultivated on the stage of provisions" and so forth: the meaning expressed here is that only at the stage of the prayogamārga does one cultivate samāhita, so abiding in the provisions, one only then cultivates pure conduct, and the purity of upholding the precepts generates absence of regret and so forth. Alternatively, when cultivating samādhi, the prior distant upāya requires that one's precepts first be pure, which is called the stage of provisions; it is not necessary that one must have entered the path before cultivating samāhita.
