Eleventh, in explaining the sūtra on contemplating the three characteristics, there are three parts: 1. citing the sūtra to mark it; 2. explaining the three characteristics; 3. concluding the distinctions. The three characteristics are: 1. calming (śamatha); 2. uplifting (pragraha); 3. equanimity (upekṣā). Exclusively cultivating calming and uplifting belongs to the preparatory practice of samādhi; one does not correctly examine dependent origination and so forth, and because one does not examine, the mind is not properly settled, one cannot attain direct realization, and cannot exhaust all contaminants to become an arhat. By repeatedly contemplating equanimity, one then contemplates dependent origination, up to the exhaustion of contaminants, because the path is fully accomplished.
