In establishing the bhūmis, the establishment of the bhūmis is distinguished solely based on the first five bhūmis, not based on the others; it is based purely on the essence of the bhūmis. The five consciousnesses and the mental bhūmi are named as having mind; lacking them is named without mind. In distinguishing having mind and being without mind, the characteristics were still not yet apparent, and it was not known where within the nine bhūmis the meaning is established; thus the intrinsic nature of the bhūmis is raised. By distinguishing having mind and being without mind among the three characteristics of the bhūmis such as the bhūmi with vitarka, one then knows the distinctions between the two states in the nine bhūmis, and also knows which of the concentrated and non-concentrated bhūmis have mind and which are without mind; therefore, there is no further need to distinguish having or lacking mind based on concentrated and non-concentrated bhūmis. The distinctions of having or lacking mind in the three prajñās, the three vehicles, and the various practices of the six bhūmis do not go beyond the preceding gates of having or lacking remainder [of substratum].
