Fourth, cultivating the path as attained has three parts: first inquiry, next explanation, and later conclusion. In the explanation, first [the text] clarifies relying on four dharmas, and later clarifies the fulfillment of five dharmas. The four dharmas are: 1. with the mind intensely yearning, the mind desires and delights in renunciation, [wishing,] "When shall I fully abide like an arhat?"; 2. having such desire and delight, one exerts diligence to cultivate the thirty-seven factors of awakening; 3. due to diligent exertion, the mind delights in seclusion; 4. through the previous three, not generating complacency, but seeking to abide in superior dharmas. As for "being able to cause five dharmas to be cultivated to fulfillment": 1. attaining fulfillment in the cultivation of joy, being able to depart from the desire of the desire realm; 2. because the defilements are severed by means of the principle of maximum diminution, the defilements of the form and formless realms are severed, the superior path is attained, and joyful delight is fulfilled; 3. being far removed from dauṣṭhulya; 4. obtaining pliancy; 5. attaining the adamantine concentration.
