In common characteristics (sāmānyalakṣaṇa), the text also has three parts: marking out, explanation, and conclusion. Regarding "common characteristic of category": although the categories of the five aggregates are distinct in entity, their meaning of "aggregation" is identical, so they are collectively called "aggregates"; "aggregate" is their common characteristic. Regarding "common characteristic of what is performed": although the substances of volition (cetanā) in the three actions and six consciousnesses are different, they are identical in being wholesome and defiled (sāsrava), and all bring about desirable results; this is called the common characteristic of what is performed. Such are their categories.
