The treatise says: "By virtue of three means of valid cognition, examining in accordance with reality; that is, by virtue of the valid cognition of supreme teaching": formerly called "words of the noble ones," it is now called "supreme teaching," meaning teaching that is supreme and ultimate; because its principle is supreme and ultimate, whether internal or external, it is in all cases called supreme teaching. Formerly calling it "words of the noble ones" was not like this. Among thirty-two kinds of speech, noble speech comprises sixteen; why must only the words of the Buddha be called noble speech? Because formerly noble designated characteristics, namely Buddhas, bodhisattvas, and so forth; now calling it supreme teaching makes no distinction of characteristics.
