The treatise, in explaining the method for cultivating the supernormal knowledge of the divine ear, states: "or wide and long places." First, a marketplace; second, a place where children play: these are called wide and long places. Furthermore, because the place is broad, long, and vast, the crowd is also boundless, meaning to take what is multitudinous. The heaven of the first dhyāna is called Brahma, Brahma meaning pure: because it is first departed from desire, it obtains the name pure. The second dhyāna is called Light: because it is first departed from vitarka and vicāra, it obtains the name Light. The third dhyāna obtains the name Pure: because it obtains superior pleasure, superior pleasure is called pure. In the fourth dhyāna, ordinary beings and noble ones jointly inhabit three heavens: the first gets its name from Cloudless, the rest are named according to the increase in merit, and the five names of the anāgāmin heavens.
