The Commentary states: Briefly distinguishing the marks of consciousness, he brings forth the substance of the transforming consciousnesses. The first line generally presents the number of transforming consciousnesses; based on what was indicated previously, it is now presented in brief. The subsequent two lines list the names of the transforming consciousnesses; taking advantage of the preceding presentation of their number, he next lists their names. This is to say that there was an objection: "Although the marks of self and dharmas both transform based on consciousness, it is not yet understood whether the transforming consciousness is one or many." Therefore he answers, "three kinds." "These" refers precisely to that which is transformed by consciousness. Those marks of self and dharmas transform based on consciousness; of this transforming consciousness that transforms them, there are three kinds. The three dharmas operate in mutual dependence.
